The Pace University New York City Model United Nations program hosted a UN careers panel on Monday 16 November, featuring Alexandra Hiniker of PAX, Greg Dempsey of Canada’s UN Permanent Mission, Lorey Campese of the UK Mission and Chanda Daniels, a current student who is interning with the Control Arms coalition.
The event was co-sponsored by the Political Science, Women’s and Gender Studies, Non-Profit Studies and Peace and Justice Studies programs; Career Services and the Helene & Grant Wilson Center for Social Entrepreneurship. It opened with a join presentation on careers in, for and around the UN, from Dr. Matthew Bolton, Model UN adviser, and Dr. Emily Bent of Women’s and Gender Studies and Non-Profit Studies. The panel then explained the stories of how they ended up in UN-related vocations. They emphasized the circuitous and often serendipitous nature of their careers — there is not one “road to the UN.” They stressed the importance of learning languages and gaining cross-cultural experience, particularly through international travel and study abroad.
