Students enrolled in the Model United Nations class and club at Pace University in New York City have the opportunity to participate in real global policymaking in the Spring semester in a continuation of the program’s unique partnership with Control Arms.
This October, the UN General Assembly passed a resolution to establish a second Diplomatic Conference, 18-28 March, to negotiate an Arms Trade Treaty that would regulate the global trade and transfer of conventional weapons. This followed an earlier Diplomatic Conference in July that developed a draft text of the treaty. Pace University Model UN students have been deeply involved in this process as interns for Control Arms, an coalition of NGOs and faith groups advocating for tigher controls on the flow of arms to those who would violate human rights and humanitarian law.
In the run up to the conference, Control Arms is looking for students to fill the following intern positions:
- Social Media and Communications Intern
- Coalition Coordination Intern
- Conference Coordination Intern
- Media Intern
- Graphic Design Intern
- Campaign Intern
- Legal Intern
Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until January 7 2013, but Control Arms would like to get people in place as soon as possible. If any Pace Model UN students are accepted into a Control Arms internship and are enrolled in the POL303C United Nations Workshop class in Spring Semester, they can count their work at Control Arms as participation in a conference for the class, rather than attending a Model UN conference, if they meet the following requirements. They must:
- Be committed to participate thoroughly in Model UN meetings and keep up with all the reading and writing assignments, including a position paper on Control Arms and the Arms Trade Treaty.
- Be able to commit to the equivalent of one work week (40 hours) as an intern with Control Arms during the Spring Semester.
*Note this is an optional assignment, not required. Those Model UN students who do not agree with Control Arms’ mission, may instead go to the National Model UN conference in New York or the University for Peace Model UN conference in Costa Rica.
