Students enrolled in the Model United Nations class and club at Pace University in New York City have the opportunity to participate in real global policymaking this Fall semester in a unique partnership with Control Arms.

The UN General Assembly’s Disarmament and Security Committee (DISEC) will be meeting this October and early November and will discuss reviving the Arms Trade Treaty negotiations that foundered this July. During the committee’s deliberations, Control Arms, a broad coalition of charities, advocacy groups and faith organizations will coordinate the civil society campaign for more robust regulation of the global arms market. Two Pace NYC Model UN students worked as Control Arms interns this past summer.

In this Fall’s POL303A International Organization Workshop (Model UN) class, most students will participate either in a simulation of international politics at the University of Pennsylvania Model United Nations Conference (UPMUNC), 8-11 November. However, a select group of experienced Model UN students will instead work as a short-term intern with Control Arms for a week during the DISEC deliberations, seeing the real UN decisionmaking process up close.

If you wish to participate in the Control Arms internship opportunity, you must:

  • Be enrolled in POL303A International Organization Workshop (Model UN) or take Model UN as a club  at Pace in New York City in the Fall 2012 semester.
  • Have at least one’s semester’s experience in Model UN at Pace in New York City.
  • Be committed to participate thoroughly in Model UN meetings and keep up with all the reading and writing assignments.
  • Be able to commit to one week of work as a short-term intern with Control Arms in October or early November.

If you would like to apply, please send a resume or CV and cover email to Emma Ensign (emma@controlarms.org) and Zoya Craig (zoya@controlarms.org) at Control Arms and Cc Dr. Matthew Bolton in the Pace NYC Political Science department (mbolton@pace.edu) by 17 September 2012. Control Arms (not Pace or Dr. Bolton) will make the final determination of those people it would like to have as its interns for this program.

*Note this is an optional assignment, not required. Those Model UN students who do not agree with Control Arms’ mission, may go to UPMUNC instead.
